1878 8TF $1 First Die Pair, VAM-9, AU58 PCGS. A Top 100 Variety. According to VAMworld, the 1878 VAM-9 Morgan silver dollar is the very first set of dies used to strike Morgan dollars. Striking the new Morgan coins began on March 11, 1878 and the first coins struck were presentation pieces for President Rutherford B. Hayes. The light silver-gray surfaces of this near-Mint example exhibit well-struck design elements, including strong detail in the hair over Liberty's ear. Population: 6 in 58, 6 finer (6/17).
