Morgan Dollars
1898-O $1 VAM-20, Repunched Date, FS-301, VF25 PCGS. VAMWorld.com includes the following comments: "Dramatic re-punched date with large over small digits. Unique to Morgan dollar series. Small date logo of Indian head cent, Liberty nickel and Barber quarter dollar size. Digit tops initially punched into die with logo tilted up and slightly skewed with right side higher, possibly to test die hardness as were many MPD's on Morgan dies." Leroy Van Allen adds: "In my humble opinion, as a unique and very visible die variety, it deserves to be recognized as the top variety [our emphasis added] of re-punched, doubled and misplaced date digits." Although well-worn, this VF25 dollar still clearly shows the repunched digits between 898. A monumental offering for the VAM specialist, and one of the first to made available at public auction out of a possible survivorship of five or so examples. Population: 1 in 25, 2 finer (6/17).
