Modern Bullion Coins
1999-W $5 Tenth-Ounce Gold Eagle, Unfinished Proof Dies, FS-401, MS70 PCGS. The origin of this scarce variety remains a mystery. Did the Mint intentionally use proof dies to produce business strikes in an effort to keep up with demand? Did Mint personnel forget to polish the dies? We do know 14,500 tenth-ounce gold pieces were reportedly struck, though far fewer have been certified. This fully struck lemon-gold five dollar is utterly flawless and a great example to add to a fine set of Gold Eagles. Population: 48 in 70 (6/17).
