Bust Half Dollars
1808 50C O-104a, R.5, AU53 PCGS. A pair of diagnostic die lines -- one above R in LIBERTY, the other from the branch stem toward the claws -- join a bold die crack from star 6 to the head to define the rare Overton-104a variety. The rarity rating was increased from R.4 to R.5 by BHNC in 1998. Typically softly struck (especially in the late die state), this die marriage is seldom seen above the AU level. Traces of mint luster remain at the margins and the all-important die crack that confirms the advanced die state is unmistakable. Olive-gold, blue, and deep-gray toning mingle at the margins and surround smooth silver-gray centers. Weakness at the hair curls and eagle's left wing are die state specific.
