Bust Half Dollars
1813 50C O-104, R.4, AU58 PCGS. A check of more than 20 years in our auction archives reveals only a handful of appearances for the O-104 variety. This example is wonderfully toned -- richly so at the borders, and lightly patinated at the centers -- with nearly full mint luster and smooth eye appeal that is often sought and infrequently found except on carefully selected AU58 coins. The I in UNITED is diagnostically higher than the T, and a hair strand curls upward and pierces the R in LIBERTY to confirm the die pair. The stars are large and slightly drawn to the edge. A scarce and desirable O-104, seldom offered and solidly within the Condition Census for the variety according to the Spring, 2017 Stephen Herrman listing, which reads 63, 61, 58, 58, 55, 55, 55 (6/17).
