Bust Half Dollars
1832 50C Small Letters, O-119, Low R.4, MS64 PCGS. This scarce variety is seldom seen and it is virtually unavailable any finer than the present example. The finest we know is an MS65 example we sold in July, 2009 (Summer FUN, lot 613). The current near-Gem coin is inarguably high Condition Census quality and the second-finest we have handled. Lightly toned in golden-gray hues and lustrous, this frosted O-119 is sharper at the centers than at the borders. The stars are clear of the dentils but most are flat -- a characteristic shared by all O-119 pieces we have seen (admittedly, a small sampling). The variety is confirmed by stair step serifs on A in STATES. The reverse legend is drawn to the edge and shows bounce doubling. One of the unsung late-series scarcities and a prize for Overton specialists. The Stephen Herrman census is 65, 64, 63, 63, 63, 63 (6/17).
