Seated Half Dollars
1876-CC 50C Small CC, WB-101, Die Pair Unlisted, MS62 Prooflike NGC. The status of this 1876-CC half dollar as an early impression from the dies is unquestionable. The only question is: "Which dies?" Although this example shares similarities with WB-33, the differences are more pronounced, leading us to believe this marriage is unlisted in the Bugert reference. Diagnostics include numerous lumps over the portrait and an unfinished area below the chin. Myriad die polish lines appear throughout the reverse, especially near TES, but none are an exact match for WB-33. Bugert noted the following for that marriage: "High grade examples of this die marriage are proof-like. The 1876-CC So-called Proof was struck from this die pair." The coin offered here certainly meets that criteria. The fields are deeply reflective and the motifs fully defined, creating marked Prooflike contrast. Each side is entirely brilliant with scattered abrasions, but they do not influence the appeal.
