Early Dollars
1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves, B-5, BB-27, R.1, XF40 PCGS. Bowers Die State III. The raised bar behind the Flowing Hair portrait of Liberty acts as a simple attribution marker for B-5, BB-27, a die pair Bowers describes as "easily the most common variety of 1795." That is not to say, however, that all examples are plentiful, merely that this marriage is more available relative to others of this date and type. That is especially true of representatives as well-defined and attractive as this XF dollar. Battleship-gray patina includes moderate violet and blue undertones. The outer elements on each side are boldly impressed with minimal friction. Only the cheek and breast feathers show slight softness. Tiny marks pose little distraction.
