Early Dollars
1795 $1 Draped Bust, Off-Center, B-14, BB-51, R.2, Fine 15 PCGS. Bowers Die State I, perfect dies. Two die pairs were used to strike 1795 Draped Bust dollars: BB-51 and BB-52. The portrait is too far left for this variety, and the B in LIBERTY is positioned directly above the highest wave of hair. Bowers believes this was the earlier of the two variants struck; The centering was later adjusted. The reverse and central obverse are untoned, while variegated blue, green, magenta, and golden-orange patina encircles much of the obverse border. The hair curls remain well-defined, as do the legends on each side, though the cheek, bust, and eagle are well-worn. Scattered marks are expected. Encapsulated in an old green label holder.
