Early Dollars
1796 $1 Small Date, Large Letters, B-4, BB-61, R.3, VF35 NGC. Bowers Die State I. The forecurl has three arcs, as usual. Attribution markers for B-4, BB-61 include close spacing between TE in STATES and a single leaf below the D in UNITED. This die pair makes up the majority of known survivors of the 1796 dollar. About 1,250 to 2,000 pieces are believed extant, according to Bowers. Most examples grade in the VF to XF range. This Choice VF representative has light gray centers that deepen around the peripheries and within the recesses. The obverse is well-detailed, and the eagle's feathers are soft -- a trait common to most BB-61 dollars. Two small pinscratches near stars 6 and 7 are the only ones of note.
