Early Dollars
1798 $1 Small Eagle, 15 Stars, B-2, BB-81, R.3, VF20 PCGS. Bowers Die State II. The 15 stars obverse is unique to this variety. STATES is small and widely spaced. According to the second edition of Bowers' Silver Dollar Encyclopedia: "Of the two 1798 dollars with Small Eagle reverse (BB-81 and BB-82), BB-81 is the rarer by a slight amount. ... VF is about par, even in some of the finest collections." This lightly toned dollar displays iridescent powder-blue, lavender, and golden color when rotated under a light source. Design detail is strong considering time spent in circulation and known strike characteristics for the variety. Small adjustment marks appear at the upper obverse.
