Early Dollars
1800 $1 B-13, BB-193, R.3, AU55 NGC. Bowers Die State "V" with an arc-shaped crack between obverse stars 8 and 11. Golden-brown and steel-blue toning embraces this richly detailed and minimally marked early dollar. Slight edge knocks near the RI in AMERICA are the sole identifiers. Due to the dramatic difference in appearance, Bolender (who copied Haseltine) assigned different variety numbers to the early and late die states of this variety. Early die states, without clash marks on either side, were known as B-13, while those with moderate to heavy clash marks and other die failures were known as B-18. Today, we recognize these as die states of a single obverse and reverse combination.
