Seated Dollars
1872-CC $1 XF40 PCGS. Silver dollar production at the Carson City Mint got off to a slow start in 1870, when only 11,758 pieces were struck, but that total would prove to be the highest mintage of the series from that mint. Production two years later, in 1872, achieved a paltry 3,150 coins, likely due to a lack of demand from depositors, and surviving examples are elusive in all grades. This XF example is highly pleasing for the grade, exhibiting original teal and gold hues beneath thick gunmetal-gray patina. The strike is bold and wear is minimal. As most extant examples are cleaned or otherwise impaired, this piece represents a rare opportunity for the Seated dollar or Carson City specialist. Population: 24 in 40, 82 finer (6/17).
