Proof Seated Dollars
1860 $1 PR64 PCGS. OC-P1. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a. Diagnostic die lines in the reflective recesses of the shield confirm the proof status of this Choice dollar, struck during one of the first years of marketing proofs to the public at a premium over face value. The Mint's estimate of how many proofs to strike was high, and many of the 1,330 proof dollars went unsold at the end of the year. The coin is untoned save for a thin haze of pale grayish-gold patina. Faint, delicate lines do little to diminish the mirrored fields that surround sharply struck, lightly frosted motifs.
