Patterns
1865 $5 Five Dollar, Judd-446, Pollock-518, High R.6, PR64 Brown PCGS. The obverse die is the regular design for the year. The reverse is the design adopted in 1866, with the scroll over the eagle's head and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST added. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. This transitional dies trial may have been struck in 1865, but it also may have been struck later with other With Motto restrikes. As pointed out on the USPatterns.com website, "The first definite appearance of this design was in the April 1870 auction by John Haseltine of coins from the Idler collection." From the overall look of this piece it appears to have been bronzed, although there is no mention of bronzing being done to these patterns in the literature. A faint undertone of red is apparent beneath the brown patina. Slight evidence of carbon is seen in the center of the reverse.
