Gold Dollars
1859-D G$1 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. AU. Variety 11-O. The 1859-D gold dollar is surprisingly plentiful considering its mintage of only 4,952 coins. Doug Winter estimates that 300-350 pieces survive. However, this example is of the scarcer die variety. The surfaces are smooth and show satiny olive-gold color. Hairlines on each side betray an old cleaning. The strike is considerably soft on portions of each side, a characteristic that seems common to the scarcer die variety.
