Liberty Quarter Eagles
1840 $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. There were few collectors around at the time to set aside first-year examples of the 1840 Liberty Head quarter eagle. High-grade survivors are likely the result of chance rather than intent, a bit a good fortune for present-day numismatists. The strike is incomplete, but evidence of friction is minimal. Straw-gold surfaces exhibit myriad abrasions. This is an exceedingly challenging issue with a low mintage of 18,800 coins. Census: 17 in 55, 19 finer (6/17).
