Liberty Quarter Eagles
1849-C $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. Variety 1. The Charlotte and Dahlonega branch mints struck nearly identical quantities of quarter eagles in 1849. The 1849-C slightly edges out its Georgia counterpart with a moderately smaller mintage of 10,220 coins and a survival rate of 125 to 150 pieces. Of those, possibly just 31 to 40 examples survive in Mint State. Winter writes, "It is among the harder Charlotte quarter eagles and is especially rare in the higher About Uncirculated grades and above." The fields have an almost reflective quality, and the devices are relatively well-struck. Light yellow-gold with scattered marks. Population: 12 in 55 (1 in 55+), 10 finer (6/17).
