Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1856 $3 MS63 NGC. Almost half as many three dollar gold coins were struck in 1856 compared to the previous year (26,010 pieces for this issue). Examples are rare in MS63. The O in DOLLARS and 185 show softness, as usual, but other portrait and wreath elements are well-defined. A softly frosted, yellow-gold representative with thin, scattered marks in the fields but not much else. Raised lines on the reverse are as-made. Census: 15 in 63, 9 finer (6/17).
