Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1879 $3 MS63 PCGS. The Mint struck a massive quantity of three dollar coins in 1878 with the expectation that demand would increase when paper reached parity with gold in 1879. It did not, and normal production resumed with only 3,000 pieces minted that year. Examples often come prooflike, but this piece takes that proof contrast to another level, clearly struck from freshly polished dies. Deep orange-gold surfaces have jet-black fields and full design detail. Small abrasions define the grade.
