Liberty Half Eagles
1839-C $5 AU53 PCGS. Variety 1. The Charlotte Mint moved to Christian Gobrecht's Liberty Head half eagle design in 1839, but the mintmark remained on the obverse until 1840. Thus, the 1839-C is a one-year subtype with the Liberty Head design and an obverse mintmark. Doug Winter suggests that fewer than 200 examples of the issue survive in all grades. This AU coin displays luminous straw-gold surfaces and smooth fields. The strike is bold, and there is absolutely nothing to distract from the eye appeal.
