Liberty Half Eagles
1842-D $5 Small Date AU55 NGC. Variety 7-E. Aside from obvious differences between the two date sizes for the 1842-D, die scratches near IB in LIBERTY aid in identification. Small Date coins were struck throughout most of the year before the Large Date dies were received at the Dahlonega Mint in October. About 300 examples are believed extant, 49 to 57 of them in AU condition and only six to eight in Mint State. Light gold surfaces display myriad abrasions, as usual. The borders and olive leaves are bold, and minimal friction occurs over the hair curls and feathers tips. Census: 23 in 55, 32 finer (6/17).
