Liberty Half Eagles
1846-D/D $5 MS61 NGC. Variety 16-J. The date is low, and the mintmark is broadly repunched southwest. This popular variety is plainly visible to the naked eye and included in the annual Guide Book. Both factors contribute to its long-standing popularity. Possibly 200 to 250 examples survive, few as fine as this. Semiprooflike yellow-gold surfaces house fully struck devices and minimal marks. Truly one of the nicest examples available to branch mint specialists given the estimated seven to nine Uncirculated representatives extant. Census: 6 in 61, 3 finer (6/17).
