1854-S $10 AU55 PCGS. The numismatic significance of the 1854-S is impossible to overstate. It represents the first year of coining operations at the San Francisco Mint, which opened in April. The facility quickly produced 123,826 ten dollar gold coins within its first eight months. Examples are exceedingly scarce in Choice AU condition. This rose and green-gold eagle retains much luster and offers strong detail, though evidence of lapping occurs within the curls. The feathers, claws, and fletchings are crisp. Population: 36 in 55, 31 finer (6/17).
