1878-S $10 AU58 NGC. A few hundred 1878-S ten dollar gold coins survive from a mintage of 26,100 pieces, but they are usually found in VF condition through lower to mid-AU grades. The date becomes a significant rarity in near-Mint State and just a couple of truly Uncirculated examples are certified. This S-mint eagle is wheat-gold with a slight reddish tinge. Partial luster remains. Moderately soft with minimal cabinet friction and scattered marks. Census: 23 in 58, 5 finer (6/17).
