Liberty Double Eagles
1854-S $20 -- Altered Surfaces -- PCGS Genuine. Unc Details. The first double eagle mintage at the San Francisco Mint was stunted to little more than 141,000 pieces due to a shortage of the parting acids needed to refine bullion deposits. These coins were extensively used in the local economy. Uncirculated examples are scarce and pricey. This piece is unworn but with finely textured surfaces that keep it ungraded and more affordable than it otherwise would be. The bright yellow-gold surfaces are lightly abraded, as expected.
