Liberty Double Eagles
1860-O $20 -- Surfaces Smoothed -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Variety 2. New Orleans double eagle production took a dramatic hit after the San Francisco facility opened in 1854. Rather than being shipped to the South, California gold could be now produced essentially on-site. Only 6,600 twenty dollar gold pieces were struck at the O-mint in 1860. Doug Winter proposes a survivorship of 85 to 95 coins, arguing that the certification totals are highly inflated by resubmissions.
This is a minimally circulated example with typical detail for the issue. The first four stars are always flat, and Liberty's curls never exhibit crisp delineation. Despite these characteristic traits, the overall impression is good. Smoothing on both sides to remove the marks that plague all survivors explains the Details assessment, but it does not overly detract. A true Type One rarity.
