Territorial Gold
1834 $5 C. Bechtler Five Dollar, RUTHERFORD, 140 G., 20 C., Plain Edge -- Cleaned -- PCGS Genuine. Unc Details. K-17, R.5. This variety is more frequently seen than most other Bechtler fives, but it is rare in the absolute sense. Markers include 20 close to CARATS and a period after RUTHERFORD. The Bechtlers were renowned for the quality of their coinage, which actually compared favorably to the federally produced half eagles. Cleaning has turned the surfaces a green or brassy color with reddish-violet patina, but both sides are wholly unworn, sharply struck, and still attractive. This is a great example from the private North Carolina assayer Christopher Bechtler. Listed on page 393 of the 2018 Guide Book.
