FRANCE. Arctic Exploration Gold Medal by Brenet, 1880. Paris Mint. PCGS SP-63 Secure Holder.
Approximately 50 mm. Issued by the Societe De Geographie and awarded to Mr. (Benjamin) Leigh Smith for his exploration of the Arctic in 1871-73. Helmeted female (Brittania) seated facing left holding wreaths with right arm extended, altar to right; Reverse: Six-line inscription in relief within circular border surrounded by wreath, legend around. Paris privy mark on edge at 6 o'clock. Sharply struck as would be expected being a Paris mint product with incredible definition of the fine details. Hard flashy prooflike surfaces and stark contrast to the frosted, light wispy hairlines from long ago in the open fields now subdued with lovely honey-gold tone which deepens around the devices. Very attractive with an interesting subject matter. PCGS SP-63 Secure Holder.

From the Vincent Alones Collection.

Estimate: $2500.00- $3500.00
