NORWAY. Speciedaler, 1694-HCM. Christian V (1670-99). NGC MS-61.
Dav-3661; KM-193; Sieg-61.1; H-39A; ABH-173A; S-14. Edge inscription: "HAEC BOREAS CYMBRO FERT ORNAMENTA LABORUM". With Order of the Elephant. Christian V was the first king anointed at Frederiksborg Castle chapel as absolute monarch. He was a big proponent of architecture and dreamed of a Danish Versailles. His motto was "Pietate et Justitia" (With piety and justice). Overall he was well regarded by his subjects as he allowed commoners into state service. Despite his lack of interest or knowledge a golden age of science was achieved due to the hard work of the astronomer Ole Romer. However, due to massive losses and empty coffers by the end of the Scanian war his image was tainted and he fell out of favor. An incredible example far nicer than normally encountered with sharp details with just a hint of tone in the peripheries and amongst the devices. NGC MS-61.
