RUSSIA. Prize Medal to Students of Dorpat (Juriev) University Struck in Gold by C. Leberecht, ND (1804). PCGS SP Genuine--Rim Damage, Unc Details Secure Holder.
Approximately 51 mm. Dia-290.1(unlisted in gold). Original issue, the name of the university was changed from Dorpat to Juriev in 1893. Bust of Alexander I right, legend around; Reverse: Six-line inscription within wreath "INGENIO ET STUDIO UNIVERS.LIT.CAES. DORPAT. D. XII. DEC." (To Talent and Diligence from the Imperial Dorpat University December 12). Established in the 17th century by Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden it is the largest and most prestigious university in Estonia. The university closed in 1710 because of the surrender to the Russians during the Great Norther War and reopen nearly a century later in 1802 by the Baltic German Ritterschaften and a new charter confirmed by Alexander I of Russia. Being that the university was re-opened by the Baltic Germans in April 1802 the primary language of instruction was German, but also Russian because of administrative and financial needs. The university educated the administration and health system of the entire Russian Empire. EXTREMELY RARE and very interesting. The noted rim damage on the insert must be from a small unobtrusive edge nick at about 3 o'clock now covered by the gasket. Sharply struck with good definition of the fine details in high-relief. Light wispy hairlines in the fields hardly distracting now somewhat subdued with attractive honey-gold tone. PCGS SP Genuine--Rim Damage, Unc Details Secure Holder.

Estimate: $4000.00- $6000.00
