RUSSIA. Odessa Society of Arts Silver Medal, ND (Ca. 1885). PCGS MS-62 Secure Holder.
Minerva seated facing left holding paint brush in left hand, art and other academic implements at feet flanked by ivy sprigs all within decorative border, legend around; Reverse: Wreath, uninscribed and unissued. The Odessa Society of arts founded a "drawing school" on 30 May 1865, but it wasn't until 1885 that they moved to their own permanent address. The school was an open society under the patronage of famous people of Odessa as well as the Russian Empire such as S.M. Vorontsov, Governor-General P.L. Kotzebue, Mayor of Odessa N.A. Novoselsky and many others. The school now has four specialty departments: paintings, sculpture, art decoration environment (ceramics, batik) and design. In honor of a former student M.B. Grekov in 1965 for the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the school it was renamed the Grekov Odessa Art School. For the 2015 school year they had 259 full time students. Sharply struck with good definition of the fine details being able to easily identify the many items at Minerva's feet. Attractive soft grey in the open fields with lovely multicolor tone amongst the devices and the peripheries. An interesting piece sure to excite the specialist of Russian medallions or art history. PCGS MS-62 Secure Holder.

Estimate: $1000.00- $1500.00
