Hadrian Fourée Denarius. Uncertain mint, after AD 117. IMP CAES TRAIAN HADR[IANVS AVG or IANO AVG DIVI TRA PARTH F], laureate bust right, with drapery over far shoulder / Radiate and draped bust of Sol right; ORIENS in exergue. Cf. RIC 20 var. (bust type) and 43 var. (same); cf. Calicó 1295b and 1297. 2.36g, 17mm, 6h.
Very Fine, banker's mark on reverse. Interesting fourée example.
Coins bearing the reverse type of Oriens are only known to have been struck in gold at the mint of Rome during the early years of Hadrian's reign. Here, the forger chose to omit part of the reverse legend found on official examples, of which there are three variants (see Calicó 1293, 1295b and 1297), in favour of a simpler design. Despite being unofficial, this coin is the only known example of the Oriens reverse type in silver and the lack of reverse legend makes this piece all the more unique.
