Byzantine Empire Æ Eight Nomismata Coin Weight. Circa 5th-7th Century AD. Basiano, magistrate (?). BAςIANω above cross; N° H below / Blank. Unpublished in the standard references. 35.89g, 25mm x 25mm, 7mm thick.
An attractive square coin weight, with much of the silver and copper inlay still remaining. Whilst the cataloguer has been unable to find the Greek form BAςIANω in any prosopography or lead seal index, it is most likely the name of the magistrate responsible for this weight.
