CHINA. 5 Yuan, 1997. Panda Series. NGC PROOF-70 ULTRA CAMEO.
Fr-B34; KM-985; PAN-298a. Struck in platinum. Tied for finest certified with only one other example at NGC and none at this grade level at PCGS. RARE in this grade. The planned mintage for this issue was 5,000 pieces, but according to Peter Anthony famous author of "Gold & Silver Panda Coin Buyer's Guide" who has done extensive research on this series the mintage is less than 500 pieces. He has contacted many of the artists involved with the designs as well as mint personnel and distributors of modern Chinese coin series. The mintage figure that Mr. Anthony suggests seems to be a more accurate figure as this piece is quite RARE and is seldom offered. For the connoisseur of modern Chinese coins the present example is a real treat and is sure to excite the advanced collector of panda coinage. A perfect grade from NGC and free of tone, haze or fog.
