ALMORAVID: 'Ali, 1106-1142, AV dinar (4.16g), al-Mariya (Almería), AH536, A-466.3, H-401a, citing the heir-apparent Tashufin, crude style, with the last alif of al-imam atop the reverse clearly engraved as a cross (cf. Lot XXX for the same mint & date of fine style, without the cross, as expected for the Arab issues of the Almoravids), choice EF. The cross can be noted on several of the al-Mariya dinars of the 530s, and this could perhaps be a reference to the Christian communities in Spain, because they were either (1) intended for trade with the Christians to the north (2) struck unofficially by the Christian states to the north, or (3) the official mint was operated by a partly Christian staff.
