Julius Caesar. 49-48 B.C. AR denarius (20.11 mm, 3.25 g, 2 h). Military mint traveling with Caesar. CAESAR, elephant advancing right, trampling on horned serpent / Simpulum, sprinkler, axe (surmounted by a wolf’s head), and apex. Crawford 443/1; CRI 9; Sydenham 1006; RSC 49. Fine, chipped flan.

The obverse is an allusion to the victory of good over evil; in this case, Caesar's victory over the Gauls. The reverse refers to Caesar's office of Ponifex Maximus, displaying the symbols of the pontificate.
