Good Very Fine. Pleasing style, dark patina with some defects. Unpublished and possibly Unique.

This lot and the following constitute two types on two denominations previously unknown from a series of bronzes that can now be definitively assigned to a city called Apollonia in Macedon. This identification is based on their very similar style and ethnic to the Persephone / Hydra issue of that city, which was traditionally attributed to Lamia in Thessaly. This erroneous attribution was made due to the lack of a clear ethnic, thus leaving identification to be deduced from the hydra reverse type, which is found on the early silver of Lamia (see Georgiou, Mint, 1-3).

As all of the examples of the Persephone / Hydra type with a known find spot have been found in Macedon, it is probable that they were issued by one of the three known cities called Apollonia in that region. As yet however, there is no evidence to ascribe coins to one of the cities in particular, the addition of these two new types further complicating the discovery of the exact mint.
