Trajan Æ Sestertius. Rome, 116 AD. [IMP CAES NER TRAIANO] OPTIMO AVG GER DAC P[ARTHICO P M TR P COS VI P P], laureate and draped bust right / REX PARTHIS DATVS, Trajan seated left on platform presenting Parthamaspates to kneeling Parthian; attendant standing behind Trajan, SC in exergue. Towards the close of his reign and having conquered the Parthians and dethroned their king Khosrow, Trajan imposed a new sovereign upon them, a scene which is commemorated on the reverse of the present coin. We see here the personification of Parthia kneeling before the emperor, and Trajan, who is seated on a suggestum and attended by the commander of the Praetorian guards, presenting Parthamaspates whom he points to with his hand. This event is attested by legend REX PARTHIS DATVS - 'A King given to the Parthians' - and must have been in the highest degree flattering to Roman pride and ambition.
