IONIA. Phocaea. Ca. 477-388 BC. EL hecte (10mm, 2.51 gm). NGC VF 4/5 - 4/5. Infant Heracles on all fours to left; above, head of seal right / Quadripartite incuse square. Bodenstedt --. Cf. CNG 102, lot 475 and Roma 10, lot 403 (same dies). Extremely rare, one of four or five known specimens!
The identification of this pudgy baby boy as the hero Heracles on this unrecorded hecte is based on a similar composition on coins of Croton, Thebes and Cyzicus showing the infant Hercules clutching two serpents, a scene from mythology (see Heritage 3049, lot 30127).
