AVTKPAT K MA–PKOC AVP ANTΩNЄINOC, laureate bust of Caracalla right, viewed from front, wearing muscle cuirass embossed with gorgoneion, circular countermark in right field / ЄΠI CTP ΙO-VΛ ANΘIMOV ΠЄPΓA/MHNΩN, Caracalla in military dress standing facing, head left, holding reversed grounded spear in left hand and sacrificing with patera held in right over flaming altar on ground to left, flanked by two vexilla, ΠPOTΩN TPIC NЄΩKOPΩ-N in three lines in exergue. SNG Copenhagen 499. Very rare! Deep green patina with areas of red.
This is one of a series of medallions issued to mark Caracalla's visit to Pergamum in AD 214, while en route to the Parthian frontier. A hypochondriac, Caracalla made sacrifices at the city's famous healing shrines to restore his flagging health.
