British India. Victoria gold Proof Restrike 10 Rupees 1879-(c) PR65 NGC, Bombay mint, KM495, S&W-6.21. A later restrike of the issue that displays light tone over surfaces and little contrast between the design and the fields. Nearly pristine however, which is certainly an unusual attribute of these later restrikes that are often seen with wispy handling in the fields.
The sequence of these restrikes can be somewhat confusing, but it is generally accepted that early restrikes were made at the original mint the dies were produced for (in this case Calcutta) with the dies later being consolidated at the Bombay Mint where later restrikes were made. While not fail-proof, the earlier restrikes were often produced with cameo contrast whereas the later restirkes often have a uniform finish.
