Alexander II silver Medal 1864 SP63 PCGS, Diakov-729.1 (R3, or possibly higher), Smirnov-759/a. 35 mm. A prize medal issued by the Imperial Royal Society for the Acclimatisation of Animals and Plants. This example is much smaller than the medal listed by Diakov as #729.1 (56mm). There is a medal listed by Diakov in this size (35mm), but that piece is listed as "Unsigned." The piece offered here has the initials H.П. on the truncation of Alexander's bust. This example has characteristics of both Diakov-729.1, but it is the size of the unsigned piece Diakov-729.4. It also appears to be quite thick. Very high relief, with superb strike and lightly mottled gray toning. The fields are reflective and minor marks are noted. Very rare.
