PHOENICIA. Tyre. Ca. 126/5 BC-AD 65/6. AR half-shekel (6.98 gm). NGC Choice VF 5/5 - 4/5. Dated CY 124 (2/1 BC). Laureate head of Melqart right / Eagle standing left on prow; palm frond behind; to left, PKΔ (date, the last two letters conjoined) over club; to left, KP over monogram; uncertain letter between legs. Cf. HGC 10, 358 (unlisted date). Cf. DCA Tyre supplement 522-523 (years 123 - 126). Unrecorded date! Decent strike and attractive toning.

The date is very difficult to make out on this piece because a rather careless die cutter engraved the Δ (4) over the K (20), thus creating an almost unreadable mess. This is one possible reason why half-shekels for this date have not yet been recorded in any reference covering this period -- this might have been the only die used for this year, and poor preservation on other examples made it impossible to make out this mangled date.
