Germany Imperial Treasury Note 5 Mark 11.7.1874 Pick 1. Cherubs flank this lovely small denomination note that was from the first series of the Imperial Treasury. The simplicity of the design should not be overlooked, as the time when this note was issued should be taken into account. This series was issued in 1874, just three years after the unification of various German states into the German Empire. At that time, currency in the already economically powerful regions were dominated by state issued coins and notes, namely of Prussia (North German Confederation) and Bavaria. Even after unification, there was no large demand to unify the currency under a single issuer, as there was a set exchange rate between the specie coins of each currency. Each state also continued to issue their own currency, thus both supply and demand for this early series was small. It was not until a few series later, after the majority of these notes were already redeemed, when a unified currency became the most popular type in Germany. A rare note grading PMG Choice Very Fine 35. Pick 1 is not valued above Fine in the Krause reference. This note is the highest graded example by PMG, without any equals. It is a nice representative for the grade and is in a comment free third party holder. HID08701242017
