Cyprus Government of Cyprus 3 Piastres 30.8.1941 Pick 26. The combination of a wartime severe coin shortage and the loss of a large shipment of 1/2 and 1 Piastre coins enroute to the island due to enemy action in October, 1942 caused authorities to overprint existing stocks of 1 Shilling notes dated 1941 with a value of 3 Piastres. These overprinted notes were released into circulation on February 2, 1943. Because 1 Shilling was equal to 9 Piastres, enterprising individuals chemically removed the overprints and made 6 Piastres for their trouble. This led officials to quickly withdraw these notes. This example is the highest grade example to be offered at public auction in recent memory, with the next highest grade being PMG 58 EPQ. PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 with a small edge stain and presence of minor foreign substance noted. HID08701242017
