Great Britain. Original Pattern Crown, 1936. Struck by John Pinches for Geoffrey Hearn circa 1956, in .925 Proof silver, possibly on the 20th anniversary of the abdication of the king. Obverse, Hearn's portrait of King left. EDWARD VIII KING & EMPEROR. Reverse, type I version of St George on reared horse, slaying dragon, by G. Holman. Edge plain. Choice uncirculated Proof finish with a light golden tone. By far the rarer of the 2 reverse types. Possibly only 20 specimens were made before the reverse design was changed. This may be the finest surviving specimen. PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo. Estimate Value $200 - 250
*There were no coins made for circulation bearing the portrait of Edward VIII. He abdicated on 11 December 1936, having reigned for less than 11 months, and was succeeded by his brother George VI. During 1936 Edward became inseparable from his American love, Mrs Wallis Simpson who obtained a decree nisi in her divorce from Mr Simpson on 27 October 1936. Wishing to marry Wallis, the King believed Britain would accept her as Queen, but the government, the archbishop of Canterbury and his mother believed otherwise. Sadly, Edward was forced to choose between love and the crown. He chose love, although he was probably not cut out to be King anyway.
Around 1956 John Pinches privately produced a number of pattern crown strikings in silver and gold. These were later imitated, but the originals, according to the book by Linecar & Stone (English Proof and Pattern Crown- Size Pieces) are relatively very scarce.
