Stephen Bathory 1576-1586, Grosz, Olkusz(?) / Siebenbürgen 1581 REX/REX - rare (R7/R8)
Stephen Bathory 1576-1586, Very rare coin in beautiful condition. A lot of lust, almost full in the background and mostly present on the relief. Very rare type with REX instead of REG on the reverse.Hutten-Czapski 7201 (R7). Parchimowicz 34.b1/b2 (hybrid: obverse with circles, reverse REX). Kopicki jak 499 (R7). Kurpiewski 81 (R8). Tyszkiewicz 75 mk.Obverse: Kings bust to the rightSTEPHANVS•D•G•REX•POLORevers: crowned eagle with Batory's crest on the chest, GROSSVS☆NO☆REX☆POLO☆1•5•8•1Silver; ⌀ 22,5mm; weight 1,663g In the literature this Grosz is attributed ot the Olkusz mint, but looking at other issues from this mint from this era, we can se major stylistical differences. These differences regard not only the portrait, but also the letters, ornaments, etc. In case of the Grosz coins from this issue it would probably be correct to consider them as being minted in one of Batorys 'home' mints in Transylvania. Similarly, Half Grosz coins form the era attributed to Olkusz mint are also of similar style. The fact that these coins could have been minted in Transylvania does not make them less genuine or an imitation issue, as they could have been coins minted on the special order of Batory, for example as a loan, as the minted in the following years Thalers from Nagybanya. Such stance about some early issues of Batory previously attributed ot Olkusz mint was voiced by Sergiusz Sztube and Marek Melcer. Definitely the fact that these coins are extremely rare caused somewhat of a lack of deep research due to small amount of pieces to compare, and the topic is definitely intriguing and worthy of further analysis.
