Early Half Dollars
1806 50C Pointed 6, Stem, O-116', T-20, R.7, XF40 NGC. Tompkins Die State 2/1. The obverse die is in its third use, now lapped, while the reverse die is in its second use but remains perfect, with no die clashing or die cracks. The state of the reverse die is important, since it meets the requirements for O-116 in its rare (currently R.7) prime die state. This example shows no trace of a die crack above UNITED or STATES, nor is there evidence of die clashing in the clouds or at OF. Glints of prooflike surface and mint luster remain around the raised motifs. Sea-green, gold, and light lilac-gray patina covers the sharply struck devices and attractive, minimally marked fields.
