Large Cents
1809 1C S-280, B-1, R.2, MS63 Brown NGC. Breen Die State VII. The outsized 9 in the date shows traces of repunching, although flowlines to the edge temper the crispness of strike at the perimeters. Still, this Select Uncirculated 1809 is remarkably well-produced and well-preserved for a Classic Head cent. The lustrous, steel-brown surfaces flash glimpses of blue and lavender.
Post-Mint flaws are nearly nonexistent on the fields and devices, which show blending of the dentils but few abrasions or signs of contact. The strike is ideally centered on both obverse and reverse. Virtually all imperfections relate to the state of the dies, with the reverse particularly exemplary in strike and surface quality. While the 1809 is not rare in an absolute sense, any Classic Head cent at the level of the present coin is an opportunity not to be missed. Our EAC grade MS60. Census: 2 in 63 Brown, 2 finer (7/17).
